Accident at Smith Conservatory

Clematis-&-conserv-6-27-01.jpg
Early Saturday morning, an individual from Hartford (not a Smith student) fell through the glass roof of the Lyman Plant House, in the area designated as the Cool Temperate House. Fortunately, he was not alone and someone was able to call for help. While he survived the fall, he severely injured his arm to the point where it nearly needed to be amputated. The Director of the Botanic Garden, Michael Marcotrigiano, was informed of the accident at about 5 am by the authorities who reported to the scene. Dr. Marcotrigiano commented that he believed the person had dropped his phone between the green houses and was trying to get to it when he fell.

Couric on CBS

Today show host Katie Couric announced that she is leaving the program to fill Dan Rather's anchor chair on CBS News. In addition to questions as to whether Couric will be a credible hard-news journalist, some wonder if she will still be worth watching when her legs are hidden behind the desk. It seems doubtful that Couric will add sophistication to the news; the move may be a sign that CBS News seeks to become softer.

It is not necessarily relevant, but it is always fun for Smithies to note: Katie Couric's rejection from Smith is frequently mentioned as a consolation to high school seniors who are rejected by their top choice school.
